Small Farm Grants Program: Update

One of the primary reasons we are so psyched about our upcoming Foodshed 5K & 3K Walk, our biggest fundraiser of the year, is that the more money we raise, the more we can give away!  We have already given out two grants to local farmers, with one more pending and another one greatly anticipated!

Here are two quick updates from Tricia Borneman of Blooming Glen Farm and Teddy Moynihan of Plowshare Farms.

Tricia:
We are very grateful for the support that the Bucks County Food Shed Alliance and our local community has shown us and other farmers in Bucks County. The grant money we have received will help us to convert a shipping container into a refrigeration unit, enabling us to expand our food storage capabilities, and extend the season we can offer local produce to our community.”

Teddy:
“We—and our pigs—are loving our new grant-funded pig feeders and waterers. Before installing our pig feeders, we were constantly lugging feed out to our pigs, and rotating them less often than we would like. With our new pig feeders, which we mounted to pallets for easy transport, we are able to refill the pig feed every five or six days, saving us lots of labor hours. With the feeder and waterers mounted on pallets, we are able to rotate pastures more efficiently, keeping pasture damage down, and increasing the health of our animals. One unexpected improvement is reduced stress in the pigs at feeding time. Now that our pigs have access to free-choice feed at all times, there is no “feeding time,” and animals therefore don’t need to compete to find space at the trough. In short, thanks to the generous grant from the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance, we are able to raise our animals better with fewer inputs, it’s a win-win.”

We are still taking applications.

Thank you to all our generous donors!

There are MANY ways to support your local farmers. Tom Murtha of Blooming Glen Farm wants all people who love their farmer to “bring a friend” to a CSA pickup or a Farmers Market.

  • BUY their products directly from them!
  • BUY their products from a local retailer.
  • SUPPORT local and national legislation that supports them.
  • ASK them if/how you can help on the farm.
  • DONATE  to Bucks County Foodshed Alliance’s Small Farm Grant Program
