“Grow This! Not That!” with nationally known Bucks County author, gardener and photographer Derek Fell is set for Wednesday, May 7, at the Newtown Township Community Room, 100 Municipal Drive, Newtown, PA 18940, 7:00 – 9:00 pm. The program fee is $5 per person. Pre-registration with Newtown Township is encouraged: 215.968.2800, x239.

“These are my own personal recommendations for growing vegetables, flowers and lawn grass varieties in Pennsylvania,” says Fell, who has been gardening and studying gardening in Bucks County for decades. He will also sell and sign copies of his new book from Rodale Press, Grow This!, at the program.

Two years ago, Fell gave an extremely well-attended program for BCFA on vertical gardening.

As a special bonus to those buying his new book or bringing to the lecture any of his books for him to sign, Fell is offering a free packet of an heirloom bean, the Lazy Wife, and a wonderful local farming story to go with it.

“This is the original Lazy Wife introduced by Burpee in the 1880s – not one of the imposters than has been sold in recent years,” says Fell. “I’ve been saving seed of the Lazy Wife pole bean for 45 years, after a Bucks County farmer, Bill Byrd of Carversville, gave me a shoebox full of seed.”

Derek FellDerek Fell is a prolific writer and photographer whose career includes working with the Burpee Seed Company and helping with a previous White House vegetable garden. He landscaped his 24-acre Cedaridge Farm in Pipersville to photograph and to share with the public through both his publications and open house garden tours. Among his dozens of books are the award-winning Vegetables: How to Select, Grow & Enjoy – still considered full of timely advice three decades later – and The White House Vegetable Garden.

Coming up: On Wednesday, June 4, BCFA will kick off its summer farm tours series with Promised Land Farm in Yardley.
