Farm Tour: Manoff Market Gardens

BCFA and Bucks BFBL announce the 2016 series of popular farm evenings that introduce consumers to the local small-scale producers who put the freshest foods onto our tables via direct sales, community-supported agriculture operations (CSAs), farmers’ markets, farm stands and other venues.

The final stop in the 2016 farm tour series is a visit to Manoff Market Gardens. While the tour is free, donations to offset the cost of BCFA’s programs are strongly encouraged.

Gary and Amy began farming on Comfort Road in 1984.  Heritage Conservancy preserved the land for farming. The orchard that had belonged to the Roberts’ had been let go for 25 yrs, so there was a lot of land clearing to start the project.  They followed a Soil Conservation Plan to preserve the soil. Waterways and terraces to control rain water runoff were erected.  A well and connected drip irrigation lines were installed to use the most efficient and environmentally sound method available for keeping crops growing.

In their first Peach Orchard block they planted White Hale peach trees as well as some other varieties to test. White Hale peaches were made famous in the neighborhood years before the Johnson family farmed there. The second block of peaches was planted nine years later in the same upper part of the farm and they have been thriving ever since.

Manoff Market Gardens has many varieties of fruit: white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, and 25 different varieties of apples. The strawberry field has 6 varieties of berries including the favorite, Earliglow.

Manoff Market Gardens enjoys the opportunity to connect people with great tasting food and help them remember why buying locally really does make a difference.

The evening’s pot luck meal runs from 6:00 to 7:00pm, with the tour to follow. Visitors are expected to bring a dish to share with others and their family’s own eating equipment, beverages and seating, and they should expect to carry out their own trash. This educational and entertaining event is appropriate for school-aged children who are under an adult’s careful supervision.
