Attention all current and potential farmers, homesteaders or other farm-food business operators: join PASA on Tuesday, January 26 for this panel discussion regarding food safety and on-farm food enterprises. This workshop is for those wondering about the regulations, challenges and benefits related to food enterprises and if incorporating a food enterprise is right for your operation We will be covering the topics of sampling, canning, baking, dairy and meat value-added products, as well as on-farm
food events.

Lead panelist and discussion moderator, Winifred McGee (Penn State Extension, Dauphin Co & Agricultural Entrepreneurship Team), will detail food safety and its importance in various food enterprises such as baking, canning, cheese making, sampling and food events. Guest panelists from a variety of local farms and businesses will then share their experiences with their food enterprise. The panel discussion will also include a question & answer session with the audience.

Guest panelists will include:
  • Country Barn Market, Lancaster, PA: farm store, baked goods, bed and breakfast and voted one of Wedding Wire’s top 20 ‘Venues for Foodies’.
  • Sweet Farm, Frederick, MD: Creators of organic krauts and 2015 Martha Stewart award nominee in the ‘Bottled, Jarred & Canned’ category.
  • The Farm at Doe Run, Unionville, PA: farm, creamery and winners of two Best of Show medals at the 100th Pennsylvania Farm Show’s Cheese competition.
  • Oasis at Bird-in-Hand, Ronks, PA: a collective of Lancaster Country growers - farm store, meats, dairy, canned & dry goods, prepared foods.

This event is part of a series of food safety and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) workshops organized by PASA and supported by funds via a Specialty Crop Block Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. This series is designed to support new, beginning & experienced growers, as well as farm and food businesses interested in diversifying their business model and being sure food sold to the public is safe.
