Food Terms You Need to Know

100 Percent Organic 

  • Can be used to label any product that contains 100 percent organic ingredients. Raw, unprocessed farm products can be designated 100 percent organic and many value-added farm products like grain flours or oats can also be labeled this.

Organic

  • Can be used to label any product that contains a minimum of 95 percent organic ingredients. Up to 5 percent may be non-organic agricultural products.

Made with Organic Ingredients 

  • Can be used to label a product that contains at least 70 percent organically produced ingredients.  

Natural

  • Food does not contain artificial ingredients or preservatives and the ingredients are minimally processed. However, they may contain antibiotics, growth hormones, and other chemicals.
