Library Speaker Series Presents Eating on the Wild Side

Find out how to glean the best flavor and nutrition from Nature’s bounty—whether you’re pulling it from the fields and forests nearby, harvesting your own vegetables and fruits or taking your pick from local farmers market vendors.

Bucks County Foodshed Alliance and the Bucks Chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local® present an educational talk by forager and food preserver Susan Pierson, who is taking an in-depth look at food activist Jo Robinson’s popular book, Eating on the Wild Side: The Missing Link to Optimal Health, on Tuesday, May 3, 7-8:30pm, at the Bucks County Free Library in Doylestown.

Pierson, a lifelong Bucks resident and gardener, is a BCFA board member and member of its BFBL Committee. She has demonstrated food fermentation and preserving techniques at farmers markets and educational presentations, and she can’t pass a field with wild greens without stopping to forage.

The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) has funded this speakers series of 10 talks around the state on the buying and eating of locally sourced food. The series is part of PASA’s ongoing efforts to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of Pennsylvania’s specialty crop growers.

Since farming began, humans have been diminishing the nutritional value of vegetables and fruits. By selecting the sweetest varieties that please the palate, we have chosen plants that are high in sugar and starch and low in vitamins, fiber, minerals and antioxidants.

Eating on the Wild Side reveals the solution. Pierson guides attendees through which varieties to choose from farmer’s markets and local producers and gives tips on how to prepare foods in ways that enhance their nutrition and flavor. Join BCFA and BFBL for an educational evening that will change the way you think about food.

Registration not required; no charge; donations accepted.
